A scripture he lived by
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”2 Timothy 4:7
Origins
A life rooted in purpose
Derrick Kwame Ameyaw Antwi, affectionately known as Nana Kwame, was born in Accra, Ghana, to Kwadwo Antwi and Rita Amoafoa Agyeman. He was the first son and third child among four siblings. Even as a young boy, his brilliance and diligence shone brightly.
He attended Prince of Peace Preparatory School in North Kaneshie, and later excelled at Star Avenue Primary School and Junior High School in Kokomlemle. His academic journey culminated in stellar Basic Education Certificate Examination results, earning him admission to New Juabeng Secondary School in Koforidua.
Work
A quiet, steady climb
Derrick’s thirst for knowledge led him to the University of Cape Coast, one of Ghana’s most prestigious institutions. After graduating, he joined Bayport Financial Services as a national service personnel in 2014.
His dedication quickly turned into a permanent role, and he rose to become Logistics Manager. He balanced that responsibility while pursuing a Master’s in Total Quality Management at the University of Professional Studies, Accra.
Character
A heart that lifted others
To know Derrick was to witness grace in motion. Radiant, robust, and ever polite, he carried himself with a gentle strength that put others at ease. He was a giant tree of wisdom and generosity. His cousins often sought his counsel, inspired by his deep seated belief in education’s transformative power.
But Derrick’s kindness extended far beyond his family. He quietly clothed the needy, fed the hungry, and gave hope to those overlooked by the world. For him, faith was not a passive creed but a call to action. “A person’s actions are a deep reflection of their character,” he believed, and he lived this truth daily.
Faith
A legacy of faith and service
Raised in a devout Christian home, Derrick’s spiritual journey began at Adabraka Official Town Presby with his mother. Later, he worshipped at Good Shepherd Methodist Church, Bubuashie, and finally found his spiritual home at Bethel Methodist Church, Kokomlemle. There, he blossomed into a pillar of the congregation.
As a dedicated member of the Youth Fellowship, Derrick served as Circuit Treasurer from 2015 to 2018 and Society Chaplain from 2016 to 2019. His calm leadership, love for prayer, and passion for prison and hospital ministries touched countless lives.
In 2010, he joined the Lay Preachers Program, driven by a desire to deepen his faith and spread the Gospel. Just weeks before his passing, his relentless devotion earned him the Superintendent Minister’s Award for Committed and Hard Working Members, an honour he received posthumously.
The final moments
The good fight, finished well
In his final moments, Derrick whispered a prayer that encapsulated his life’s journey. Words brimming with peace and resolve, reminding us that he truly fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith.
Though our hearts ache with his absence, we find solace in knowing Derrick now rests in the arms of his Saviour. We pray he is crowned with the righteousness he so faithfully pursued, a crown bestowed not by mortal hands, but by the Eternal Judge he loved and served.
Legacy
Carrying his light forward
Derrick’s legacy lives on in every life he touched. In hospital bills quietly cleared for children in pediatric wards, in hot meals handed to children sleeping on the street, and in prayers whispered over families in the hardest weeks of their lives.
In his memory, we invite you to continue his mission of compassion. Rest well, dear Nana Kwame. Your race was run with grace, and your light remains eternal.
